GMA Bats For Peace As War Rages In Mindanao
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo put on the hat of a peace-dealer today as she ascended the podium at the UN General Assembly, the fourth head of state to speak at the opening ceremony.
Quite predictably, Mrs. Arroyo bannered her disarmament, demobilization and rehabilitation in any future peqace cengagement with Filipino rebel groups.
She also laifd the blame squarely at the door of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front for reigniting the war in Mindanao.
Conveniently, she neglected any mention of the roundly-denounced Bangsamoro Juridical Entity agreement which had been exposed as a sell-out of Philippine sovereignty and a naked ploy to amend the Constitution on the road to dismembering the Republic.
Anyway, being candid about the bungling of the Mindanao peace process was not expected by the audience.
The genuine chord that GMA struck was her plea for international support for pursuing the Mindanao procress, there really being no other alternative.
We hope that at thec sidelines of the General Assembly meeting, a stronger case vwill be made for the massive humanitarian effort that must be set into motioin to ease the sufferinf og some 500,000 Mindanaoanswho are internal refugees in their conflict-ridden land.
The resr of the peqace-making will really be the cresponsibility of the nextb Philippine president.
