Manny Pacquiao Enters Filipino Pantheon of Boxing Greats (UPDATED)

June 29, 2008

I first wrote this post in late June last year and Manny Pacquiao has since soared higher and higher.

Not only did he beat the legendary Oscar De La Hoya into retirement in November 2008.

Just this Sunday he demolished the pretensions to greatnest not of another Mexican but of a Briton: Ricky Hatton of Manchester, England.

Masterful is not even enough to describe howPacquiao took down the so-called Hitman, with even Bob Arum, the boxing promoter who has handled the best pugilists the world has seen (including Muhammad Ali), paying tribute to the Filipino’s humility and his “readiness to keep on learning and learning” and even calling PacMan “the greatest boxer who ever lived.”

Arum was certainly flushed with joy when he said that and with Pacquiao still at his peak he surely will sore higher, and higher.

One boxing analyst called him a different name after he knocked Hatton out in just two rounds: Superman.

Superman, indeed.

Manny Pacquiao again erased the political and social divide that separates Filipinos by knocking out Mexican David Diaz and capturing the World Boxing Council lightweight crown.

Pacquiao displayed blinding speed and unmatched punching power as he beat Diaz into a pulp through all 9 rounds of the scheduled 12-round fight in Laz Vegas, sending Diaz to the canvass with a left cross smack into the jaw of the outclassed Mexican.

This ended the fight with 34 seconds left in the 9th round, giving the fighter from General Santos City his fourth world title.

This early Pacquiao, just 30 years old, has elevated himself into the pantheon of Filipino boxing greats.
