Perilous Times for the Philippines

October 30, 2008

The global financial crisis is continuing to swirl like a tropical storm with even powerhouse Japan in the early days of a recession.

Here at home the outlook is unsettled economically, and politically.

As Filipinos commune with the dead this long weekend there is disquiet not only about Joc Joc Bolante but more so ominously over statements from five Catholic bishops led by the head of the Catholic Bishps’ Conference: a call for “drastic reforms,” even a change of government with a dark reference to “liberators” waiting in the wings.

Most pointedly the Supreme Court Chief Justice, Reynato Puno is saying no to any extra -constitutional intervention, while Malacaang through Justice Sexretary Raul Gonzeles. who never minces words, slammed the bishops’ remarks as “seditious.”
