Hooliganism In U.P. Diliman

February 18, 2009

A late evening newscast the other day included an eerie post-Valentine report: a member of the University of the Philippines police force lying comatose in a hospital from the severe beating from hooligans who rioted after authorities tried and failed to maintain order at a pre-Valentine’s rock concert.

In times past, violence in Diliman erupted mainly from pocket encounters between warring fraternities and protest actions being suppressed by martial law-era troopers.

Then there are the harmless screams during the traditional Oblation Run.

But rioting during a mindless rock concert???

Hooliganism draws its origins from anarchists in Europe’s soccer games.

Life-threatening hooliganism in U.P. during its centennial year?

Has the world really gone crazy!!!???
