Joc Joc Bolante, Merceditas Gutierrez, And The Public Interest

March 1, 2009

Former agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn ‘Joc Joc Bolante says the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee under Sen. Richard Gordon is dead wrong in recommending that he and 10 others be charged with plunder for the fertilizer fund scam that defrauded farmers of PhP 728-M.

And he now looks to Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez to bail him out of his legal problems.

Gutierrez is facing enough heat as it is with citizens group poised to seek her impeachment.

In her recent media interviews and before the Senate, Gutierrez was unable to mask her annoyance that media reports and commentaries “have painted a picture that my office is sleeping on the job and of favoring First Gentleman Mike Arroyo.”

“That is not true. My record in public service bears out the fact that I have never favored any friends or friends of friends,” Gutierrez has asserted.

Bolante is angry, Sen. Gordon is angry, Filipinos are angry.

Will the lady Ombudsman be swayed, and in whose direction?

For our sake, and hers, she cannot be on the wrong side of justice, and history.
