The government of the day is quietly counting down the days left in its hold on power.

Still o it may not wrong at all wrong for it to try to speed up efforts to convince the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to go back to the negotiating effort with a ‘good faith gesture’.

But do scorned ‘lovers’ go back to an affair gone sour?

Is it at all realistic for an outgoing regime to raise expectations of hammering out an equitable, comprehensive, and binding peace agreement with secessionists who nearly succeeded in carving out a separate sovereign ‘ancestral domain’ for themselves?

Do we conveniently forget that when the secretly-negotiated deal was ruled unconstitutional, supposedly renegade units went on a rampage in North Cotabato, Lanao del Norte, and Saranggani and left scores of innocent non-combatant dead?

Presidential Peace Adviser Avelino Razon, a former national police chief, has solid credentials but will he be clothed with full presidential powers to sign a peace pact unlike his predecessors ho initialled the botched MoA-AD but were disowned when the heat became unbearable?

Will the MILF decide to wait out the remaining 14 months and return to the negotiating table when a new duly-elected government with an unquestioned mandate takes office in June 2010?
