The MERALCO-PLDT Alliance And The 2010 Elections

March 14, 2009

In the mainstream media business reports its being called as simply an investment deal aimed at generating synergies that will benefit Filipinos.

But is the headline-making alliance just forged by the Lopez clan’s MERALCO power distribution giant with the Philippine Long Distance Company now chaired by Mr. Manny Pangilinan just that exactly?

Not really.

This corner thinks this is actually both a strategic and tactical ploy connected to the 2010 elections.

The Lopezes are scrambling to prevent an all-too-obvious play by Mr. Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco to gain too much influence in their business empire that includes the politically-potent ABS-CBN media empire.

Last year when it was GSIS Chairman Winston Garcia who tried, but failed, to gain control of MERALCO, the Lopezes claimed it was a really an attempt by the Arroyo regime to get ABS-CBN  because of its widely perceived anti-GMA stance.

Today. it is not a secret that the political parties of Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Cojuangco are becoming more closely aligned with the approach of the elections.

Both Sen. Francis Escudero and Defense Sec. Gilbert Teodoro have declared their presidential ambitions.

The various ticket presidential and vice presidential ticket pairings for the administration are being kicked around while the political opposition is also trying to sort out its act.

While Escudero is currently tipped to be Mr. Cojuangco’s anointed one it is entirely conceivable that instead of being paired with his Nationalist People’s Coalition party-mate Loren Legarda it will become as Escudero-Teodoro unity ticket.

While his survey numbers are impressive, Escudero is seen by some as lacking in political experience being on just his first term as senator.

Chiz will turn 40 only in October this year, the minimum age qualification for president. Teodoro’s poll numbers leave much to be desired but his broader experience in both the legislative and executive department are plus factors for his presidential aspirations

The third emerging element in this business-cum-political puzzle is the Lopezes new ally: PLDT’s Manny V. Pangilinan.

There is also scuttlebutt that MVP. widely admired for his business acumen, could becme another dark horse in the 2010 derby if he, too, decides to run.
