Cory’s Bodyguard And Her Mark Of Greatness (Updated with links)

August 4, 2009

I’ll leave it to the mainstream to recap the fulsome tributes and poignant recollections of the 20 orators who spoke at this evening’s necrological service for President Cory except for one: Mel Mamaril who stood as her close-in bodyguard for all of 23 years.

It was Mamaril’s simply-worded tribute that was, to my mind, a most meaningful and instructive caricature of how great Cory Aquino was.

The father of four recalled how Cory’s kindness and love for people taught him to carry a rosary instead of a gun.

And the account that left Kris Aquino sobbing was this: one occasion where returning to her Times Street home some years back they arrived with not one among the household staff there with no food ready.

Cory herself went inside the kitchen, Mamaril recounted, and went back to him with a bowl of noodles she herself prepared to make sure he didn’t go hungry.

If this was not a mark of greatness of spirit and character nothing else is.
This was Cory Aquino.

The eulogy given by Mel Mamaril touched the hearts of thousands of people. Here is what I wrote about it.
