This is the story now breaking out over the gastronomic engagements of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her delegation in New York Ciry after she met with US President Barack Obama at the Oval Office in Washington D.C.

Now it’s the venerable Wastington Post’s society column ‘Reliable Sourcea’ reporting on a presidential dinner days after that celebrate Le Cirque event.:

Heartburn Over Two Big Meals
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s visit to the White House on July 30 didn’t draw much attention, and her dinner in Washington that night got nary a mention. And that’s how it might have stayed — if not for a controversial meal in New York City.
Arroyo is under fire in her native country for a $20,000 meal at Manhattan’s Le Cirque on Aug. 2, which included caviar and several bottles of champagne. The dinner, first reported in the New York Post, has Arroyo’s critics comparing her to the extravagant Imelda Marcos.
The Reliable Source has learned that three days earlier, Arroyo and an entourage of about 65 people (including security and food tasters) had dinner at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse on 15th Street NW hours after she met with President Obama. The group took over one of the restaurant’s private rooms and dined on lobster, steak and fine wines; at the conclusion of the meal, an unidentified woman opened a handbag stuffed with cash, counted out bills and paid the $15,000 tab — which included a generous tip.
The Philippine Embassy did not return calls for comment Tuesday.

This story clearly appears to match the photograph which began circulating on the Internet several hours ago.

I have no further comment except that the Washington Post report got it wrong in referring to the Bobby Vans Steakhouse presidential gathering as lunch.

This was already dinner as the Obama Arroyo meeting was at around 4:00 p.m.

The New York Post carries this vertion of the dinner at Bobby Van’s:

It is also now being revealed that the presidential entourage of about 65 people ate at two other fine dining steakhouses.

As Manolo Quezon reports in his blog:

“the President’s dining pals inadvertently leaked all the other places the presidential party dined at: Wolfgang’s Steakhouse on Park Avenue (per Rep. Amelita Villarosa) after the St. Patrick’s Mass; and dinner that evening at Bouley’s Restaurant (per Rep. Hermilando Mandanas); the President’s husband, before she could snatch him away from the clutches of reporters, enthusiastically burbled he intended to take her to an “expensive restaurant” that night –it turns out, with the usual hangers-on.”

There are indications about how much money was spent at Wolfgang’s and Bouley’s.
But here’s a peep at the interiors of the two restos in the Big Apple:

I don’t want to sound like a GMA apologist but steak and prawn are ordinary food that even poor Americans eat. There is nothing so fancy and so spectacular about this food among Americans and Pinoy expats. These are common food items in an American restaurant, just like the kare-kare and adobo or nilagang manok in our local restaurants. To tell you the truth, I would pay more for “diningding” and “pritong galunggong” than the controversial “steak” in GMA’s dinner.

If GMA has a total of 65 entourage, eating a food that cost 35$ per person, would only be $2275.00 add another$300 for a tip, the most that you can spend is about $3,000.

The story about the lady-staff who rummaged through her bag for cash and paid $15,000 for the meal must have been an exageration. Who walks around New York Manhattan with a $15,000 in her bag must be nut. This is the age of plastic where transaction can be done in one swift swipe of your credit card.

But unless proof of the bill and the payment thereof are documented, these overpriced dinner is one of those “political” bad ad for GMA by her detractors.

      Hi, Atty. JCC,

Nah, bencard is in the lapdog class all his own.

The outrage of Filipinos 10,000 mile away steps from the fact that while Arroyo and her retinue were steakhouse-hopping , the nation was in grief over Cory death.

Equally galling as far as I’m concerned is Arroyo’s fake commiseration and the PR push that she had rushed back to Manila to catche the wake.
