When Perception, Reality, And Public Outrage Converge: The Arroyo Dinners

August 12, 2009

NINOY GMA QUOTES MONTAGE

The artworks capture the public mood.

The left frame encapsulates the posture that cost Ninoy Aquino his life.

The right frame, which is making the rounds of the World Wide Web, mirrors the sentiment many Filipinos have about the Le Cirque Restaurant presidential wedding  anniversary dinner.

Malacanang insists it was a simple event.
Even granting that it was, from the standards of the government of the day,  the comparisons, unkind as they are, cannot be denied.

Two truisms are in play: the medium is the messaged, and, the most unkind cut is that perceived as reflective of the truth.

Sad thing is those holding the reins of oppressive power are seeing conspiracies where there are now.

What there is is public  outrage.

This is my final post on this issue.

Update:

I’ve really wanted to let this issue go given how other issues are breaking out.

But it’s so disconcerting that Malacanang is seemingly resorting to squid tactics, with the President Arroyo’s election’s lawyer now being called in as virtual attack dog against media outlets that have been carrying the series of the Philippine Center on Investigative Journalism on discrepancies in the President Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN).

A telling development overnight is the surfacing of what I considering the ‘smoking gun’ photo of one of those expensive dinners of the Arroyo entourage.:

WHERE AND WHEN WAS THIS DINNER

What’s revealing is this was not at that controversial Le Cirque dinner but at another venue, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse in Washngton D.C. to which the Arroyo retinue, said to number 65-strong, went after the Obama-Arroyo Oval Office meeting.

A veteran journalist has helped this writer identify several of the personalities in the photograph.

On the left, the gentleman in the black suit and white shirt is Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

To his left is Congresswoman Amelita Villarosa. Beside Villarosa is Manila 3rd District Congresswoman Zenaida  Ang Ping, and to her left is Rep. Aurelio Gonzales of the 3rd District of Pampanga.

Not one but two American Dailies carry eye-raising details about the dinner:

How can public outrage subside with such reports coming to light and visual proof serving as fuel to the scandal?
