A potentially serious security crisis is in progress in Palawan’s southernmost island municipality of Balabac.

Details now emerging say an undetermined number of srmed men belonging to the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) nearly 48 hours ago without provocation or unspecified demands.

As the Philippine Daily Inquirer is reporting it, the MNLF elements are said “to be occupying two barangays and some 1,000 people have fled their homes.

The area is within the jurisdiction of the AFP’s Western Mindanao Command.

It is not clear if the MNLF unit in action in Balabac are directly under the commanders of former ARMM governor Nur Misuari.

The crisis in Balabac comes as the military is going through the motions of csarrying out Pres. Glria Macapagal Arroyo’s order for “the annihilation of the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan.”

This is the first armed incursion by outside element in Palawan since the Abu Sayyaf struck the EWl Nido Resort where Amerivcan missionary couple Marcia and Martin Burnham were kidnapped and held hostage for months on end.

A military rescue operation resulted in the recovery of Marcia but the fatal shooting of her husband.

The inquirer report has also not mentioned any reaction from Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

We are in tense anticipation.
