Farewell 2009, Hello 2010; Celebrations And Prayers
2010, like all new years, brings hope and cheer.
The next 365 days promise change for the better with Filipinos looking to hold their first ever automated election that will hopefully minimize if not eliminate cheating of the Dagdag-Bawas, Hello Garci?’ brand.
With it comes the election this May of a new President with unquestioned mandate, hopefully imbued with vision to reform and rebuild our corrupted institutions.
The ultimate result: the path toward better economic times, especially for our neglected poor, many living hand to mouth existence while our best and brightest uprootingf themselves to find their future abroad.
But most of all we hope 2010 will help us put a stop to the killings, many politically-motivated and all of them reflecting the breakdown of our criminal justice system, of law and order.
As we bid 2009 goodbye, let’s take a few moments to celebrate the triumphs of two great Filipinos: Efren Penaflorida with his globally-applauded pushcart classroom, and Manny Pacquiao, the world’s boxer of the decade.
Then let’s say a silent prayer for justice for the 57, dozens of them journalists, whose innocent lives were snuffed out in the Maguindanao massacre.
Please Lord, never again.
