A Petition For Joey Velasco To Be Named National Artist For Visual Arts (Postscripted)

July 25, 2010

We are petitioning His Excellency, President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino to posthumously declare Maestro Joey Velasco National Artist for Visual Arts in grateful recognition of his advocacy to help our countless school children.
Through his magnum opus Hapag ng Pag-Asa, Joey Velasco galvanized action to give the hapless kids not just their own homes through the help of Gawad Kalinga, but genuine hope for a better future.

This hope Joey Velasco portrayed on canvas through Hapag ng Pag-Ibig.

Even though he was seriously ill, Joey Velasco wielded his brush to realistically and passionately instill love of country and abiding faith in the Lord.

Let us be continuously inspired

POSTSCRIPT

It is through art that we all stay in tune with our humanity, our blessings and the plight of the less fortunate. The rat race, the political divisions that bedevil our society can be thoroughly numbing and do plant the poison seed of indifference, of apathy. If our hope for reforms is yet frustrated, our very own children may join the swelling ranks of street children. :(|

For those unfamiliar with Joey’s genius:
